The Paymasters is now Canterbury Trusted | Payroll Bureau

We’ve got something to celebrate. The Paymasters has been recognised as a Canterbury Trusted business – an independent, verified mark of trust, integrity and responsibility awarded by Business Canterbury.

For a team that has done payroll – and only payroll – since 1996, this one means a great deal. Three decades on from our first pay run, having an outside body look closely at how we operate and put its name behind ours is a proud moment for everyone here.

And here’s the part we want to be honest about: this isn’t a badge you can simply buy and bolt onto your website.

What Canterbury Trusted actually means

Canterbury Trusted is a certification from Business Canterbury – the organisation backed by more than 165 years of supporting businesses across our region. It exists to recognise and celebrate businesses that get the fundamentals right and lead with trust, integrity and responsibility.

In plain terms, to carry the mark a business has to show it:

  • Acts with integrity – ethical, transparent, straight-up in how it deals with people
  • Delivers consistently – reliable, high-quality work, not just once but year after year
  • Shows financial strength – stable, responsible, and meeting its obligations
  • Values people – a genuine, positive impact on its team, its clients and its community

Crucially, it’s earned, visible and verifiable – the opposite of a business simply declaring itself trustworthy. You have to put yourself to the test and prove it.

Why it isn’t a rubber stamp

The reason we’re proud of this is the process behind it. Canterbury Trusted involves a thorough, independent evaluation – and the recognition is renewed every year, so it can’t be a one-off effort that fades.

Getting there means opening up the business across areas like financial sustainability, risk management, health and safety, and people and culture – first through a detailed self-assessment, and then through independent verification, where Business Canterbury checks the claims with our own team, our customers and our suppliers. Nothing is taken on trust; it’s confirmed.

For a payroll bureau, that scrutiny feels entirely fitting – because scrutiny is exactly what we do for a living.

Why this matters when your business is payroll

When you outsource your payroll, you’re handing over one of the most sensitive, high-stakes jobs in the whole business. People’s pay. Their tax. Their leave. Their trust in their employer every single pay run. There’s no margin for “close enough.”

So a certification built around trust, consistency and doing right by people isn’t a nice-to-have for us – it goes to the very heart of the service. Canterbury Trusted gives the businesses we look after an independent reason to believe what we’ve always asked them to take on faith: that their payroll is in careful, capable, accountable hands.

It also sits alongside the credentials our team already holds – every member of the bureau is NZPPA certified – and reinforces the standards we bring to Payroll Compliance for New Zealand employers navigating the Holidays Act and everything that comes with it.

What it means for local Canterbury businesses

Choosing a Canterbury Trusted supplier is a shortcut through a hard question: can I actually rely on these people? The mark answers it for you – the checking has already been done, independently, and it’s renewed each year.

For local employers weighing up who should run their payroll, we hope it makes the decision a little easier. You’re not just taking our word for it anymore. You’re backed by Business Canterbury’s word too.

Thank you

Recognition like this doesn’t happen without a team that earns it quietly, every day, one accurate pay run at a time. Ours does – and this is as much their moment as anyone’s.

Thank you to Business Canterbury for a rigorous, worthwhile process, and to the employers across Canterbury and beyond who’ve trusted us with their people since 1996. We don’t take it for granted, and this certification is our commitment to keep earning it.

If you’re thinking about who should be handling your payroll – or you’ve inherited a payroll you’re no longer sure about – we’d love to help. Contact us for a confidential discussion.
