From One to 240,000 Payslips: A Year in the Life of a Christchurch Payroll Bureau

Twenty-five years ago, The Paymasters started with a simple premise: get payroll right, every time, for every business that trusted us. Back then, we could count our clients on two hands. This year, we processed 240,557 payslips for 13,416 employees across hundreds of New Zealand businesses.

But here’s what those numbers don’t tell you.

They don’t tell you about the café owner with one employee who called us in a panic about their first PAYE filing. Or the construction company with 487 staff navigating the complexities of the Holidays Act across multiple sites and casual workers. They don’t capture the accounting firm who white-labels our services for their clients, or the manufacturer who migrated from a failing system and needed an extensive Payroll Remediation completed due to errors in their old payroll.

Our average client has 36 employees. Our median client has 15. That gap tells the real story of New Zealand business – most of our clients are small to medium enterprises, the backbone of our economy, but we’re equally equipped to handle the larger operations that need enterprise-level payroll expertise without enterprise-level pricing.

Every one of those 240,557 payslips represents someone’s rent, their groceries, their kids’ school fees. Get it wrong, and you’re not just dealing with IRD penalties or compliance headaches – you’re affecting real lives. That weight of responsibility hasn’t changed since day one, whether we’re processing ten payslips or ten thousand.

What has changed is our capability. NZPPA-certified staff. Deep expertise in MYOB systems. A track record of navigating every curveball the Holidays Act 2003 can throw. The technology to handle complexity and size. The experience to make it look simple.

But we’ve never forgotten where we started, or who we serve. The one-employee business requires the same diligence as a 700-employee operation. Because in payroll, there’s no such thing as a small client – just people who deserve to be paid accurately and on time.
